Yoga Can Help some People with Rheumatoid Arthritis

Thirty people with RA who led sedentary lifestyles were divided into two groups. One group was given an eight-week yoga programme, while the other was put on a waiting list and acted as the control group.
Participants underwent two one-hour yoga sessions per week and were also told to practice at home. The techniques were modified to suit the needs of people with RA, and also included deep breathing, relaxation and meditation techniques.
The scientists discovered that the eight-week yoga programme significantly reduced joint tenderness and swelling. The question of how and why yoga might be having this effect needs to be answered.
