A self-help guide to claiming Personal Independence Payment for adults with rheumatoid arthritis

Since the foundation of the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society, we have been aware of the difficulties faced by people with rheumatoid arthritis when the severity of their disease caused them to have to consider applying for Disability Living Allowance (DLA) and now when applying for Personal Independence Payment (PIP).

We know from talking to our members that many of them are self-effacing and prone to saying things like ‘well, there are people who are worse off than me’. Amongst some, there is almost a view that they don’t deserve to receive PIP. PIP is intended to be a benefit which enables you to gain a little more independence and help you to achieve things which you can no longer do and you do not need to feel guilty or undeserving about applying for it!
