NRAS welcomes review of PIP assessments
Published: 2 Feb 2018
Earlier this week, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) announced that every person receiving Personal Independence Payments (PIP) will have their claim reviewed. This follows a court ruling that said changes to PIP were unfair to people with mental health conditions.
NRAS receives countless calls and emails to its Helpline regarding PIP assessments, with many stating that PIP assessors simply do not understand what rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is and how it affects people’s daily lives. NRAS raised this issue in October 2017 with the former Secretary of State for the DWP.
Ailsa Bosworth, CEO of NRAS, said:
We are pleased that the DWP has realised the necessity of reviewing all claims for PIP. Many people with RA have been discriminated against and are not receiving the appropriate levels of support. We hope that an improved level of understanding of RA and its effects on people’s lives will lead to more appropriate assessment outcomes.
