NRAS is the only patient-led charity in the UK working exclusively for people affected by Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA). It is a national charity, supporting all those who live with these diseases, their families and the health professionals who care for them. As a small charity, with a current income of circa £1m, it achieves a huge amount on a small budget and punches well above its weight.

Job Description

Reporting to the Finance Director, the Finance Assistant will have the primary responsibility for the timely and accurate processing and input of all entries to the purchase ledger, sales ledger, cash and banking and nominal ledger for the Charity and trading subsidiary.

Main Responsibilities

  • To assume responsibility for the coding and input of all purchase invoices on to Sage.
  • To ensure that all invoices have been appropriately authorised.
  • To raise all sales invoices on Sage and to actively manage debt collection with the help and support of appropriate colleagues within the charity.
  • To process payments as instructed by the Finance Director
  • To reconcile the Bank on a weekly basis and to liaise with Fundraising Department to ensure that all receipts are correctly coded.
  • To assist the Finance Director in the month-end close process for the Charity
  • To assist with the submission of Gift Aid Claims
  • Preparation and submission of VAT returns for the trading subsidiary
  • To assist in the preparation of the Charity Commission Return and such other returns as may be required.
  • Liaison with solicitors and other relevant parties for the finalisation of Legacies to ensure that maximum funds are received as quickly as possible.
  • To assist Fundraising with other administration matters.

Qualifications and Skills







AAT or Part qualified accountant.


· Some prior book-keeping experience



Previous use of Sage


Knowledge and Skills

· A basic understanding of double entry book-keeping and how P & L and Balance Sheet are created – you need to be more than a data entry clerk

· Common sense

· Good written and oral communication skills

· Good working knowledge of accounting systems, preferably Sage.

· Proficient use of Microsoft Office programmes particularly Excel.

· Good interpersonal skills.

· Team player.
