As Christmas approaches we are constantly surrounded by images of the ‘perfect family Christmas’, smiling faces, snowy scenes and all the lovely things that go with this time of year. However, the reality can sometimes be very different. Not only on the person suffering with RA, but on the family as a whole, it can have a tremendous effect on day-to-day life. Please take the time to read Fiona’s story of living with RA:
“I raised money for NRAS in memory of my dear friend Marina who passed away 6 years ago aged just 39; she died of complications from her RA. Despite a lung transplant she sadly passed away leaving behind a husband and 3 children. Marina was the most courageous woman I know, and I never saw her without a smile on her face despite so many years of suffering. She was a truly beautiful woman who was dearly loved and is sorely missed.”
Fiona was then subsequently diagnosed with RA herself.
“I was a pretty sporty person, swimming, taking Zumba classes and running several times a week until Easter 2013 when I was struck down, virtually overnight, with RA. This left me crippled and unable to do the simple things I always took for granted, like walking, making drinks, preparing meals, taking baths, the things you do every day without thinking.
At the beginning of this year, following a plethora of medications, physiotherapy and hydrotherapy, I began to get my mobility back. My consultant suggested I try going back to swimming and taking up cycling to improve my mobility and fitness. I am hugely relieved to say this has worked to such an extent that I entered my first triathlon last year and took on a 24 hour running challenge this year! I thought I would manage 15 miles but was delighted to complete 50 miles in the 24 hours!"
NRAS has been a great support to me throughout my illness. This is why I am asking you to consider supporting NRAS this Christmas. Their support has been invaluable to me. With your help NRAS can continue to be there when people need them most.
If you need someone to talk to, NRAS can match you to someone who's been through a similar experience. Call us today on: 0800 298 7650.
As this year ends and another new one approaches the demands on charities like NRAS continue to increase. Please consider supporting us today so we can continue to help those living with RA and JIA.
The team at NRAS would like to wish you a peaceful Christmas and New Year with family and friends.
