National Institute for Health & Clinical Excellence (NICE)
NICE looks at how cost effective medicines are but they do not look at all of the costs that are involved.
NICE looks at the cost of the drug compared to established drugs which are always cheaper than new drugs and does not look at what impact the newer drugs can have, for example:
- On keeping people at work
- Not needing the support of family and carers
- Not claiming benefits
- Allows them to feel that they are contributing fully in society
NRAS believes that the wider costs to society should be included in the NICE approach and are campaigning very actively in this area.
The new NICE Guidelines
The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) Guidelines show healthcare professionals what a good standard of care looks like and what you should expect as a patient.
NRAS wants to ensure that all NHS organisations implement these guidelines and we are working very closely with NHS managers both locally and in the Department of Health (DoH).
