Professor Peter Maddison

Peter Maddison was appointed Professor of Musculoskeletal Medicine, School of Medical Sciences, Bangor University and Honorary Consultant Rheumatologist to the North West Wales NHS Trust in 2006. Since 2009 he has been Director of the Bangor Institute for Clinical and Translational Research. Prior to this, since 1996, he was Consultant Rheumatologist to the North West Wales NHS Trust and Professor of Musculoskeletal Medicine in the School of Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences, Bangor University.
A graduate of Cambridge University, he worked for several years in the USA, working with Professor Morris Reichlin on the clinical significance of anti-“ENA” antibodies, before returning to the UK in 1979 as Consultant Rheumatologist at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases, Bath. He later became the first Glaxo Wellcome Professor of Bone and Joint Medicine at the University of Bath until his move to North Wales.
Research Interests:
- Catabolic effects of rheumatic diseases and effect on muscle mass and function, the cause and prevention of muscle loss in arthritis and the role of exercise
- Outcomes assessment and management of systemic autoimmune diseases
- Assessment of novel anti rheumatic treatment Professor Maddison has published extensively in these areas that form the basis of ongoing research.
