Dr Robin Butler
MD, FRCP

Born
in London in 1949 Dr Butler was educated at Christ's Hospital and
studied medicine at Charing Cross Hospital Medical School, graduating
in 1972. He developed his interest in rheumatology while undertaking
laboratory research in immunology and started his rheumatology training
in 1978, working with Professor Tiny Maini and Dr Tom Scott at Charing
Cross Hospital and later with Professor Derrick Brewerton at
Westminster Hospital. Since 1985 he has been Consultant Rheumatologist
at the Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, Oswestry and
also works at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
His clinical
interests include rheumatoid and other forms of inflammatory arthritis,
and osteoporosis. As secretary of the British Society for Rheumatology
he was closely involved in drawing up the BSR guidelines for the use of
TNF blockers in rheumatoid arthritis, as well as the BSR and BLAR
submissions to NICE about these drugs. He is married to Linda and they
have three children aged 16, 20 and 23. His leisure interests include
reading, listening to music and (dry weather) motorcycling.
