Dr
Patrick Kiely qualified in medicine from the Middlesex and University
College Hospital Medical School (University of London) in 1988. He was
awarded a first class honours intercalated BSc in genetics and
psychology in 1985, and shared the Middlesex Hospital Medical School
BSc Prize for the most outstanding student.
Postgraduate
medical training was spent at The London Chest Hospital, The University
of Southampton Hospitals, The Royal Surrey County Hospital, St George’s
Hospital and St Helier and Kingston Hospitals. In September 1993 he was
awarded a Medical Research Council Training Fellowship to undertake
basic scientific research into “Cellular mechanisms in mercuric
chloride-induced autoimmunity”, under the supervision of Professor
D.B.G. Oliveira in the University of Cambridge. He attained a Ph.D.
degree from this work in 1996.
Since joining St George’s as
consultant rheumatologist he has developed research interests in the
fields of rheumatoid arthritis (therapies and ultrasound imaging),
Vitamin D insufficiency and idiopathic inflammatory myositis. He runs
special interest clinics for patients with rheumatoid arthritis,
vasculitis and myositis.
