Dr Andrew Cairns

Dr Andrew Cairns was appointed Consultant Rheumatologist at Musgrave Park Hospital Belfast in 2004. He also provides Rheumatology clinics at Belfast City Hospital and Lagan Valley Hospital Lisburn. He was educated at Wallace High School Lisburn and the Queen’s University of Belfast medical school. After junior and senior house officer posts he was appointed clinical research fellow at the Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast, studying aspects of lupus and rheumatoid arthritis pathogenesis, and gained an MD degree for this work. He trained as a specialist registrar in a number of rheumatology and general medicine posts throughout Northern Ireland and also at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh.
He has wide interests within rheumatology including rheumatoid arthritis, biological therapies, and musculoskeletal ultrasound. He has been tutor on a number of musculoskeletal ultrasound training courses for rheumatologists. He is Principal Investigator in Belfast for the multicentre TRACE RA study. He also holds a Master of Science degree in Sport and Exercise Medicine. He is married with two children.
