Hydroxychloroquine could reduce the risks of RA patients developing diabetes

Several studies have suggested a link in the past between taking hydroxychloroquine and a reduced risk of developing diabetes, but have generally been very small or based on self-reported data from patients. However, a larger study, covering over 1000 patients (with a mix of 333 that have used the drug and 794 that have never used it) adds further weight to this theory.

Between 2003 and 2008 there were 48 cases of diabetes within this study group, only 3 of which were taking hydroxychloroquine when they developed the condition. It is hoped that further research might show potential benefit with this drug in decreasing the risks of diabetes for other high risk groups.
